| The sunset on our first night in our Bluff Cabin at the Kalaloch Lodge. |
Sometimes you
just need to get away from it all - with your dog.
I would say the
Kalaloch Lodge, 30 miles from any other restaurants or services, is definitely
getting away from it all. It's located on the Washington Coast in the Olympic National
Park.
On a quest to
travel more with the dog, I found Kalaloch online in October. I thought it
would be fun to go storm watching in November. So, away we went!

The cabins were rustic, but warm on our chilly, sunny November weekend.
|
The quietest
place - We pulled into the lodge at almost 8 p.m. on a Friday in
November. It took us about a 2-hour, 15-minute drive from Olympia. Other than
the roaring sea crashing waves onto the beach, you hear ... nothing. We stayed
in a Bluff Cabin with few neighbors. There is no TV and no working radio
stations. The quiet was divine.
Accommodations- I
half jokingly told Darling Husband upon arrival that "we're camping!"
The cabin was very rustic. Chilly tile floors, log furniture, a modest kitchen
and wood paneled walls welcomed us. The sofa and eating area were pretty
uncomfortable, but the two queen beds were good. Loved the linens.

What to do -
sleep. I needed this. I slept when the sun went down. I napped after lunch and
breakfast. While we anticipated storms, the weather was sunny and 50 degrees.
We enjoyed a long beach walk and watched the sunset. We also got a bunch of our
Christmas cards ready to mail!
What to eat - the
lodge does have a
restaurant, but our cabin had a kitchen and my husband is an
amazing cook, so we ate in. The kitchen was short on counter space, but had
everything we needed. Dane did get a couple of coffees from the little
general store on site, one mocha and one salted sea turtle that he enjoyed.
 |
| Lots of warnings about beach logs killing people. We seemed to do OK. |
Verdict: We
returned home from Kalaloch feeling like we had been at a spa all weekend. I'm
sure the lodge is much louder and bustling with families in the summer. But we
really enjoyed the quiet of the offseason. The beach was untouched perfection.
Plus, dogs are welcome and Ralphie had a blast on the beach and hanging with us!
A major win.
