Winter Weekend Getaway in Walla Walla, Wash.

The beautiful view of the Blue Mountains from Amavi Cellars in Walla Walla.
There really is nothing better than going home.

Darling Husband and I spent a long weekend in Waitsburg and Walla Walla checking out what was new and catching up with good friends. Here are some notable spots if you are in that area.

Eat at your own risk! The spicy Reactor Core pizza at Atomic Ale in Richland, Wash.
Feel the heat
Driving through the Tri Cities on our way to the burg, we stopped for dinner in Richland at Atomic Ale Brewpub & Eatery. I enjoyed the dark brown Plutonium  Porter with a ton of flavor. Little did I know, it would be saving my mouth from fire. My dinner was the Reactor Core pizza, which was delicious with jalapeños, mushrooms and onions, but very spicy! The blue cheese toned it down a bit, but its deliciousness made my nose run. This restaurant had a fun atmosphere and yummy pizza. $$

I was amazed by this Fort Walla Walla Museum exhibit showing how many mules used to pull the combine that harvested wheat in the Walla Walla Valley in the 1800s.
Fort Walla Walla
While Darling Husband was napping after an early morning of family time looking for geese ... I headed to Fort Walla Walla Museum. The weather was sprinkling rain and cool and the museum was very quiet. The robust gift shop was great. I saw about three history books I wanted to take home. I wandered through the exhibits going in and out of the old barracks. My favorite part was the boards with information about local homesteaders. I knew of many of the names and loved to see the Waitsburg area history. Inside the main museum building, the visiting exhibit was World Wars: The Walla Walla Story, and it had lots of photos, artifacts and information about the town during WWI and WWII. The vintage wedding dresses stole my heart. Don’t miss the AAA discount. $

A fun new restaurant on Main Street.
Great place to watch the game
On Sunday after church, Dane and I ate lunch at the new Wingman Birdz & Brewz in Walla Walla. We shared boneless chicken wings with maple bourbon bacon and Southern barbecue sauce, birds nest fries with cheese and a buffalo chicken quesadilla. The wings and quesadilla were fantastic. Lots of flavor and not overcooked. Skip the bland fries. The bar was packed with folks enjoying the football game on the big screens and the atmosphere was just fun. Great for couples, OK for kids. $$

Another fabulous winery in Walla Walla. Don't miss the view!
A little vino
Now, even after living in the Walla Walla Valley for three years, we hardly put a dent in our list of wineries to visit. So, I can't visit without going to one! I had heard the view was spectacular at Amavi Cellars and boy was it. The weather was clear and we enjoyed the gorgeous blue sky with a backdrop of the snowy Blue Mountains. The winery had a unique old truck for photo ops. It was January, the offseason, and Dane and I were the only customers when we arrived. We enjoyed four wines: Semillon, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a dessert wine. We took home a bottle of the Semillon, though the Syrah was also smooth and drinkable as well. The gentleman behind the bar was a hoot as well as the prospective Whitman College parents who showed up to enjoy the area’s finest. $$$

We enjoyed the relaxed, not pretentious, tasting experience at Amavi.
Pick up a hostess gift
This visit, we stayed overnight with family in Waitsburg, so I needed a thoughtful hostess gift. The pastor who married Dane and I now works part time at the D’Olivo Quality Oils & Vinegars shop in Walla Walla on Main Street, so I popped in for a visit and a gift. I bought a $12 bottle of oil that will be great on Aunt Linda's salads from her gorgeous garden. The company was delightful and the oil was wrapped in a beautiful bag with bow. $

I returned to Tumwater on Monday happy to have seen some sun and our loved ones. The Walla Walla Valley is continuing to grow and new restaurants and activities and coming in all the time. Don't miss out on Walla Walla!
There's just something about a cute old truck...
